What exactly is jurilinguistic revision?
Jurilinguistic revision deals with the content, style, language, readability and consistency of legislative texts as well as the equivalency of the English and French versions of those texts. It’s therefore a very specific, and very interesting, field that focuses not only on the comparison of the English and French, but also on the use of language (grammar, linguistics, etc.). More particularly, as an English jurilinguist, you will be responsible for revising the English version of legislative texts and for verifying, with a Francophone colleague, the equivalency of both linguistic versions.

Who are jurilinguists?
Jurilinguists work in Department of Justice Canada’s Legislative Services Branch. They are part of the large team of legislative counsel, legistic revisors, bijural experts and editors who work to produce legislative texts of the highest quality. Legislative texts aren’t mere deeds or contracts applicable to individuals; they are laws and regulations that govern all of Canadian society. These texts are therefore of great importance and must be produced in accordance with established conventions and standards.

Coaching
Given the particularities of jurilinguistic revision, some methods and knowledge can only be learned on the job. That is why, as a junior jurilinguist, you will receive coaching and your work will be revised during the first part of your journey and, above all, you’ll have the advantage of working closely with experienced Francophone and Anglophone jurilinguists who will be there to support you throughout your career.

A partially or fully assessed pool may be established to staff similar positions within the Department of Justice with various tenures, various linguistic profiles (bilingual imperative only), various operational requirements and/or various conditions of employment.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of two years of a post-secondary program with acceptable specialization in social science, statistics, library/archival work or a law-related field or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Significant experience* in providing linguistic advice in English.
Significant experience* in revising the English version of texts from a linguistic perspective, for example, the grammar, syntax and style.
Significant experience* in comparing the English and French versions of texts to ensure their equivalence, to identify discrepancies and to suggest appropriate revisions.

* "Significant experience" means experience to the extent and depth of which would normally be acquired by accomplishing a vast array of complex and related activities over a period of four (4) years.

Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field related to the English language (e.g. translation, linguistics, literature, etc.).

The PPC/PPC language profile for the position of Junior Jurilinguist, English requires the use of technical or specialized skills, code P in English and French in reading and writing. The code P in English and French will be assessed by means of a written exam.

Knowledge of the French language, for example, its grammar, syntax and style;
Knowledge of the English language, for example, its grammar, syntax and style;
Knowledge of the principal translation and revision tools.

ABILITIES:
Ability to improve, from a linguistic perspective the English version of complex and sensitive texts for example, their grammar, syntax and style;
Ability to communicate effectively orally;
Ability to work under pressure;
Ability to compare the English and French versions of complex and sensitive texts with a view to identifying discrepancies between the two versions and suggesting appropriate corrections;
Ability to identify, analyze and solve linguistic problems.

COMPETENCIES:
Demonstrating integrity and respect;
Thinking things through;
Working effectively with others;
Showing initiative and being action-oriented.

Must be willing, and available, to work overtime when necessary.
