Duties

Employees are primarily responsible for conducting forensic examinations of electronic devices (cellular telephones, computers, electronic storage devices, etc) in relation to Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) investigations. These duties will result in daily exposure to Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSAM) which may depict serious and graphic images of children across a variety of age ranges (infant to teenager). Employees would be expected to attend search warrant locations in the course of their duties and support ICE investigations across the province of Alberta.

Work environment

ICE members are housed in either the Edmonton based ALERT building, or the ALERT facility in Calgary. As ICE services the province of Alberta, employees are expected to be able to travel to a variety of locations throughout the province in support of ICE investigations, which may include being present at the search warrant execution locations, and providing on-site forensic analysis and support during the seizing of electronic exhibits. ICE falls under the umbrella of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), and investigates offences related to the exploitation of children over the internet. This could include but is not limited to: the possession, distribution, importation and manufacturing of any child pornography and any computer-related child sexual abuse materials via the internet, luring children over the internet, and voyeurism involving victims under the age of 18.

The work environment for this position involves the following conditions:

• Daily exposure to graphic CSAM material in picture, video and written form.
• Travel throughout the province of Alberta as necessary to support on-going investigations.
• High pace and dynamic office environment.
• Travel outside of the province of Alberta for mandatory training as necessary.

EXPERIENCE

• Recent** and significant*** experience extracting and conducting analyses of electronic data.
• Experience building, maintaining, repairing and upgrading personal and networked computer hardware.
• Experience troubleshooting and/or problem-solving with at least three of the following operating system platforms: Android, iOS, Windows, Linux or Macintosh.
• Experience preparing technical reports.

**Recent experience refers to experience acquired during the last five (5) years.
***Significant experience refers to experience normally associated with performance of the duties on a full-time basis over a consecutive period of at least two (2) years.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Willingness and ability to travel domestically to attend training, or for work, as necessary.
• Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, overtime, on evenings and weekends, and/or on a shift schedule.
• Willingness and ability to provide expert testimony in court.
• Willingness and ability to work in a Police Environment within Digital Forensic Lab that specializes in investigations that focus exclusively on child exploitation offences. This involves the continuous daily exposure to significant numbers of images, videos and chat conversations that depict the sexual exploitation of children of ALL ages.
• Willingness and ability to use computers and forensic software to conduct forensic computer examinations continuously in their daily role within this unit.
• Willingness and ability to assist in the execution of search warrants within the Province of Alberta.
• Willingness and ability to travel out of the Province of Alberta frequently for overnight and extended periods.
• Willingness and ability to complete the understudy requirements.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
