Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one term position (4-5 years) in the National Capital Region. A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions with various tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, acting, acting extensions, assignment, secondment) and language requirements/linguistic profiles (“English Essential”, “English or French Essential”, “Bilingual BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC”) and/or security status (reliability, secret) within Environment and Climate Change Canada across Canada.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with an advanced degree (Masters, Doctorate) from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position (such as applied mathematics, environmental science, conservation, biology, or zoology).

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Recent* and significant experience applying innovative statistical approaches using advanced statistical analysis software for the analysis of complex biological data sets.
Recent* and significant experience working with teams to design and implement surveys for wild animals.
Recent* and significant experience providing statistical advice to managers or scientific professionals on topics such as survey design, sample allocation or data analysis.
Recent* and significant experience writing and publishing scientific papers involving the design of wildlife surveys and analysis of wildlife data.

* Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last five (5) years.

Knowledge of statistical aspects of wildlife survey design.
Knowledge of advanced statistical approaches for analyzing wildlife survey data.

ABILITIES:
Ability to transform general project objectives into quantifiable goals and explain statistical concepts, techniques and results to various stakeholders.
Ability to design wildlife surveys to address program objectives.
Ability to analyze biological survey data provided in any of a variety of formats using appropriate statistical methods.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Ability to plan, organize and set priorities.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience designing and/or conducting surveys for seabirds and/or other marine animals.
Experience analyzing large wildlife datasets using Bayesian and/or Machine Learning methods.
Experience using complex species distribution and/or resource use models, to analyze spatial or temporal patterns in animal abundance or movement.
Experience analyzing demographic data for wildlife using approaches such as mark-recapture models, stage-based models or integrated population models.
Experience analyzing animal survey data using models that account for imperfect detection.
Experience conducting surveys for birds.

ASSET KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of monitoring techniques relevant to birds in Canada.
Knowledge of how to use survey data for wildlife and/or natural resource management.

ASSET ABILITIES:
Ability to identify Canadian birds by sight and sound.

• Willing and able to travel, this could include travel to various locations in Canada and internationally, on occasion.

• Willing and able to perform fieldwork.
• Willing and able to travel to remote locations and by small boats or small aircraft.
• Willing and able to work in adverse environmental conditions.
• Willing to obtain and maintain a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for non-restricted firearms.
• Willing and able to carry and use firearms in the field.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Pre-employment and ongoing medical clearance
