Duties

Community Health Nurses deliver comprehensive nursing services to First Nations communities. They provide in-depth nursing knowledge, skills, clinical expertise and advanced judgment through consultation, clinical practice, and leadership while also facilitating knowledge transfer through health promotion and disease prevention.

The three streams that fall under “Community Health” are: Public Health, Home & Community Care and the Float Team.

Public Health responsibilities include communicable disease control, well child clinics, pre-natal and post-natal programs, school health, health promotion, and disease and injury prevention.

Home and Community Care responsibilities include case management, chronic disease management, wound care, and post-operative care in client homes.

Float Team Nurses enjoy autonomous, varied work travelling to many of the Alberta First Nation Communities while immersed in diverse First Nations cultures. Float Team Nurses will be required to travel from the position location (Enoch) to any of the following communities on a regular basis:

- Alexis
- Goodfish Lake
- Heart Lake
- Paul Band
- Saddle Lake
- Sunchild
- Duncan
- Sturgeon Lake

Work environment

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations people in Alberta. The maintenance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally safe care are paramount in these areas of practice.

Please note: Float Team Nurses will travel to the Alberta First Nation Communities identified under “Duties”

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to fill three Home Care nurse positions (Alexis, Saddle Lake, Sunchild), seven Public Health nurse positions (Duncan, Saddle Lake, Sunchild) and establish a Float Team based out of Enoch (please see 'Duties' for more information on the Float Team role).

Occupational Certification:
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:
Independent clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN) in one of the following 2 areas:
i. Public Health/Community Health *Includes but not limited to Maternal/Child Health, Immunizations, Infection Prevention and Control.
ii. Home Care *Includes but not limited to Wound Care Management, Long Term Care, Supportive and/or Seniors Living.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in pediatric nursing
Experience in palliative care nursing
Experience in Mental Health
Experience in chronic disease management
Experience working with First Nation communities

Operational Requirements:
Travel to rural locations on gravel roads
Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion

Conditions of employment

Security clearance to the Reliability level
Possession of a valid driver’s license
CPR Certificate, Healthcare Provider Level C, renewed annually
Continuous professional registration, without conditions or restrictions, with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta
