Duties

Summary of Duties

Provide technical support for the development and advancement of the science and technology of material processing and alloy development to improve the performance of products employed in areas such as transportation, oil and gas, nuclear and advanced materials;
Assist in conducting tests, pilot-scale experiments and laboratory-scale process simulation for measurements of metal processing variables and assessment of material properties, manufacturing performance and/or process optimization;
Preparing, assembling and calibrating equipment and carrying out basic programming of equipment.
Preparing material, samples and work sites and carrying out basic analytical tests and measures.
Collecting, compiling and presenting data in numeric, graphic and narrative summary form.
Maintaining technical logs, files, inventories and other records, and operational systems as required.
Conducting basic and routine maintenance of equipment.
Review and follow required health and safety guidelines, processes and procedures in work activities and work site.

In consultation with other technologists, CanmetMATERIALS scientists and stakeholders, the incumbent will support scientific research leading to the development of technologies that will benefit Canadians and contribute to the delivery of CanmetMATERIALS’s mission and the mandate of Natural Resources Canada. This, in turn, will contribute to the economic and environmental success of Canadian industry, and to the quality of life of Canadians derived from the value-added use of minerals, metals and materials.

Intent of the process

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada and in the Federal Public Service with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), to staff positions with various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

EDUCATION
Successful completion of an accredited post-secondary science, or technology diploma program related to manufacturing sciences, or

Certificate of apprenticeship and certificate of qualifications for Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), or

An acceptable combination of education, training and/or industrial experience will be considered.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Recent experience in metal forming testing or metal processing equipment in a research or industry setting. Experience gained in post secondary laboratories will be considered.
Experience working directly with complex scientific, pilot-scale equipment and facilities relevant to metal processing
Assembling, installing and repairing basic apparatus and equipment for use in scientific projects or for industrial applications
Providing assistance in operating equipment, typically in a plant environment

ASSET CRITERIA
Experience in hot rolling of ferrous and/or non-ferrous metals
Experience in cold rolling of ferrous and/or non-ferrous metals
Experience in metal forming and forming techniques
Experience working with scientific metal testing or thermo-mechanical processing or thermo-physical simulation equipment
Work with compressed gases, acids, bases and other chemicals
Experience using a MIG welder, and oxy-acetylene torch and a plasma cutter to industry standards.
Experience in the safe use and operation of a water jet cutter.
Experience in the safe operation of an industrial band saw.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS
- Travel outside the normal work area is required periodically to conduct industrial trials.
- Occasional overtime duty
- Operating heavy equipment such as forklift and overhead crane
- Occasional heavy lifting up to 35kg (75lbs)

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Required to wear personal protective equipment including but not limited to CSA certified hardhat, CSA certified safety boots with metatarsal guard, CSA certified safety glasses, hearing protection, and respiratory protection.
Travel outside normal work area is required periodically to conduct industrial trials.
The ability to obtain certification to operate heavy equipment such as a forklift and overhead crane.
Able to work around relatively strong electromagnetic fields on a periodic basis.
The ability to lift up to 25kg on a routine basis.
