Duties

On November 25, 2019 the Federal Court of Canada approved a settlement for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Department of National Defence (DND) sexual misconduct class action. This settlement affects people who experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment, or discrimination based on gender, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation while serving in the CAF, working for DND, or for the Staff of the Non-Public Funds, Canadian Forces.

The approval of this settlement represents a significant milestone. The settlement provides financial compensation for individuals who have been harmed by sexual misconduct and outlines changes to CAF and Veterans Affairs Canada policies. This approved settlement also provides an opportunity for individuals to share their experiences with DND/CAF representatives in a facilitated Restorative Engagement (RE) process.

In light of this approved settlement, the Sexual Misconduct Response Centre (SMRC) is hiring skilled, compassionate and dedicated Practitioners to join their team with positions available across Canada.

Restorative Practitioners will facilitate and co-facilitate the participation of class members (CMs) and Defence Representatives (DRs) in the RE program. Practitioners working with class members (CMs) will conduct initial contact and lead ongoing communication with CMs. Practitioners will also coordinate, prepare for and facilitate direct and indirect engagements between CMs and DRs through individual and group sessions. Practitioners working with DRs will co-lead the DR cohorts and will build capacity among DRs to engage restoratively. Practitioners will provide information about supports and resources available to support participants’ wellbeing and their participation in the program, and coordinate referrals where needed. In addition to these functions senior Restorative Practitioners (WP5) will also be responsible for providing supervision, mentorship and leadership to other Restorative Practitioners.

To learn more about the approved settlement, visit the class action website. For further information on the mandate and the role of the SMRC, please visit the link below.
