Duties

This project involves the study of Late Triassic paleontology, ichnology and sedimentology in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in northeastern British Columbia. The study will involve fieldwork in remote locations, to examine sections and collect samples throughout the middle Carnian time interval. Additional material will be collected from subsurface hydrocarbon drillcore. These samples will then be analyzed using a variety of techniques, including macropaleontology, ichnology, petrography, and SEM. Future years may include the possibility for additional fieldwork. The project aims to interpret environmental changes in the middle Carnian, and to understand the relationship between fossil occurrences, sedimentology and ichnology, in order to refine regional stratigraphic framework models. This study will form part of a larger study of stratigraphy and environmental change in the Late Triassic as part of the GEM GeoNorth Program of the Geological Survey of Canada.

Intent of the process

The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a Master of Science degree supervised by Dr J.-P. Zonneveld at the University of Alberta.

• Currently enrolled or willing to enroll at the University of Alberta in a Master of Science program with specialization relevant to the duties of the position.

• Graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, Environmental Science, or other relevant specialization from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
