Duties

Successful candidates will be required to revise and sometimes translate (from English to French or French to English, depending on the candidate’s language combination) a variety of documents from the Parliament of Canada (House of Commons, Senate and their respective administrations) and related organizations (including the Library of Parliament, the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the Parliamentary Protective Service). Some of the workload must be completed under tight deadlines.

Parliamentary Documents Division: Our team translates all documents supporting the work of the House of Commons, the Senate and the Library of Parliament, such as feature articles for the Parliamentary Review, Hill Notes, public submissions, parliamentary committee reports, public communications products, or statutory orders and regulations. Our clients include the Administrations of the House and the Senate, as well as Members of Parliament, Senators, the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the Parliamentary Protective Service, and we cover all areas of Canadian and international news.

▻ We provide year-round service. Our positions may require evening or weekend work.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮

Established in 1934, the Translation Bureau is a special operating agency of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to communicate with and serve Canadians in its two official languages, Indigenous languages, foreign languages as well as signed languages and oral transliteration.

It offers translation, revision, editing, terminology, language advice, closed captioning, and interpretation services to federal departments and agencies and Parliament. The Translation Bureau also provides online tools and resources to Canadians through the Language Portal of Canada.

The Translation Bureau is the center of excellence in linguistic services for the Government of Canada. It also plays a leadership role in the various spheres of federal government activities and increasingly stands out in the Canadian languages industry as a leader in language technologies due to its innovative culture.

▻ 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: Positions in the Parliamentary Translation Directorate are based in the National Capital Region (Ottawa and Gatineau). However, teleworking from anywhere in Canada is permitted under certain conditions.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in translation from English to French or from French to English from a recognized postsecondary institution.

𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬:
1. Based on their education, training and/or experience, indeterminate incumbents of positions in the TR Group will be deemed to meet the minimum standard.
2. At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum standard.

• A cumulative five years' experience in translation and revision from English to French or French to English in a fast-paced operational environment.

ASSET EXPERIENCE

• Experience in comparative revision (English to French or French to English).
• Experience managing translation projects.

Conditions of employment

Security requirement: Secret

▻ The security clearance is not a factor at the screening stage but must be obtained before the start of work. If you do not have the required security clearance, the Translation Bureau will launch the process if you are successful in the competition.

Services are provided year-round. Depending on the stream and the Division, some people may be required to work on a rotational basis during the day, evening or night, including weekends.
