Work environment

AAFC Vineland site is the location of one of seven Canadian test sites participating in the National Minor Use Pesticide Program (MUPP) which accelerates access to new and effective crop protection tools and technologies for agricultural producers across the country. Fruit tree research is conducted at the AAFC research farm located at nearby Jordan Station, ON. The farm contains 32 hectares of orchards and research plots.

Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management including application of pesticides for greenhouse insects and disease control.
Knowledge of modern horticultural practices and plant maintenance in controlled environments including for example, material preparation, seeding, planting and watering of plants, proper sanitation practises and monitoring of plant material.
Knowledge of insect pests, diseases and their symptoms and control measures.
Knowledge of horticultural equipment.

Reliability Status security clearance

• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability and willingness to obtain a valid pesticide Applicators Certificate.
• Ability and willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
• Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments such as heat and dust.
• Ability and willingness to tolerate the presence of irritants such as dust, pollen and spores. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of protective mask and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
• Ability and willingness to perform physical work activities including moderate manual labour requiring bending and lifting objects (up to 20kg).
• Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours (e.g. early morning).
• Ability and willingness to travel off site if required.
• Ability and willingness to obtain the Lift Truck Operator’s Certification.
• Ability and willingness to obtain the Elevated Work Platforms/ Scissor Lift Certification.
• Ability and willingness to obtain Fall Protection Certification.
