Duties

In consultation with other CanmetMATERIALS engineers, scientists and stakeholders, the incumbent will support scientific research leading to the development of technologies that will benefit Canadians and contribute to the delivery of CanmetMATERIALS’ mission in support of the mandate of Natural Resources Canada. This will contribute to the economic and environmental success of Canadian industry, and to the quality of life of Canadians derived from the value-added use of minerals, metals and materials.

Summary of Duties
The incumbent will:
- Provide research and development computational engineering service in support of projects related to integrated computational materials engineering
- Collaborate with other engineers, scientists and stakeholders
- Contribute to project teams

This position is located in Hamilton, Ontario. CanmetMATERIALS is a state-of the-art facility in materials research that will provide world class R&D in partnership with universities and industry. It will anchor an innovation cluster in manufacturing.

Intent of the process

EDUCATION

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, geological engineering, naval architecture or some other specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

- Experience using numerical techniques, such as finite element analysis, to solve technical problems

- Experience in computational simulation as related to material behaviour, testing, fabrication or processing.

Information on language requirements

KNOWLEDGE

- Knowledge of the finite element numerical method
- Knowledge of continuum mechanics of materials
- Knowledge of verification, calibration and validation in relation to finite element analysis.
- Knowledge of programming and scripting languages.

ABILITIES

- Ability to use finite element analysis software to perform simulation and analysis as related to material behaviour, testing, fabrication or processing.
- Ability to develop and implement pre-processing and post-processing procedures for finite element analysis.
- Ability to manage and automate workflows.
- Ability to communicate effectively.

- Experience working on high performance computing systems

- Knowledge of other numerical methods such as finite difference, finite volume or spectral methods
