Duties

The student will conduct research on soils from research fields in Southwestern Ontario that have shown the ability to suppress soybean Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS). Expected approaches include: 1) complete SDS suppression screening in controlled environment chambers, 2) comparison of the microbiome in suppressive vs conducive soils, 3) identify unique microbes that have the potential to be developed as biocontrol agents.

Work environment

The Harrow (Ontario) Research and Development Center is one of 20 Research Centres under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network. The facilities include a modern lab/office complex to house more than 100 full-time staff and two research farms for field studies. Harrow RDC is a lead contributor in soybean pathology and soil microbiology. The pathology and soil science programs combine pure and applied science that are used to develop soil management and disease mitigation strategies for the agriculture sector.

Education:
Currently enrolled in a PhD program in South Western Ontario with a specialization in soil microbiology or related fields.

Note: Applicants will need to reside near Harrow RDC to access labs, fields and facilities during the work period.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience* in soil microbiology.
Experience* in plant microbe interactions.
Experience* in conducting scientific research.

*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Reliability Status security clearance - Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.
