Duties

Woody biomass hold significant amount of carbon and the changes have impacts on Canada’s greenhouse emissions. This project will expand the knowledge on the historical trend of carbon stock in perennial vegetation (e.g., trees, shrubs, shelterbelts) in and around croplands, grasslands, and other lands from 1990. Currently, this data is generated using small sample sizes and thus suffers from high uncertainties. Additionally, our knowledge on the carbon dynamics of several woody species is lacking. This study will build upon existing science on monitoring of shelterbelts available in selected regions and establish the extent of other perennial vegetation (shrubs), calculate the carbon stocks and ascertain the changes over the last three decades. Several statistical and modeling approaches will be explored and used in to map the areas under perennial vegetation. There will be some field work involved in conducting “testing and validation” in selected geographical locations. The project will use historical aerial images, contemporary satellite images such as LIDAR to conduct ground truthing. Limited travel may be involved.

The project will open opportunities for student to contribute to greenhouse monitoring and reporting, work with a team of experts in geosciences, land use change and agroforestry.

Work environment

The student will be working at the Ottawa Research and Development Division.
Given the COVID-19 restrictions, a remote “work-at-home” arrangement could be made.
