The employee will be responsible for applying experience, knowledge and skills to support scientific data management and analysis initiatives using modern computer programming or scripting languages such as, but not limited to, Python or R. This work will support various oceanographic programs within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Maritimes Region. The employee will work in a team environment with technical staff, research scientists, and managers and will be expected to provide thorough documentation of software and to maintain code in repositories to ensure shared development and version control.
This is an anticipatory pool that may be used to staff temporary or permanent positions with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector in Dartmouth, NS and St. Andrews, NB.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, mathematics, engineering, geomatics, scientific programming or some other science relevant to the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in computer programming or scripting languages for data management and analysis purposes.
• Experience in designing and developing software using modern computer programming or scripting languages such as, but not limited to, Python or R.
• Experience providing data management advice and recommendations to clients and/or project leads and/or managers.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a M.Sc. or Ph.D. from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, mathematics, engineering, geomatics, scientific programming or some other science relevant to the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in the design and development of front (Graphical User Interface) and back end applications.
• Experience in designing and developing software and applications using Django.
• Experience in the development of software for collection, archival, and/or quality control of data, preparation of graphical outputs and/or reports.
• Experience programming with SQL and relational database design.
• Experience with the use of Linux/Unix-based operating systems and associated scripting languages (e.g. awk, sed, bash).
• Experience working in the fields of marine or aquatic science.
• Experience working with oceanographic datasets.
KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of methods and procedures for processing and applying quality control for scientific data.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of software design.
• Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of statistical analysis.

Suspension of vaccination requirement:
Effective June 20, 2022 the vaccination requirement for the Core Public Administration (CPA), including the RCMP, will be suspended. As of that date, employees of the CPA will no longer be required to be vaccinated as a condition of employment.
Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
