Duties

Sustainability Metrics (SM) is a national, collaborative research network of the Agriculture and Agriculture that monitors and reports the environmental performance of agriculture and provides data, tools and procedures to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of agricultural croplands. Several scientific models are used to achieve the program objectives. Monitoring and quantifying the changes that occur in agricultural croplands is central to this research.

This project involves expanding the knowledge on the historical trend of perennial vegetation (e.g., trees, shrubs, shelterbelts) in and around croplands from 1990. Currently, this data is generated using small sample sizes and suffers from high uncertainties. This study will use the existing knowledge on the areas of perennial vegetation in selected provinces, explore the provincial datasets on the shelterbelts, and extend the model to other prairie provinces. Several statistical and modeling approaches will be used in analyzing the photographic images and or satellite images to map the areas under perennial vegetation in croplands. There will be some field work involved in conducting “testing and validation” in selected geographical locations.
Limited travel may be involved.

SM has opportunities for students to be involved in this research contributing to expanding the data on agricultural trends, work with a team of experts in geosciences, land use change and agroforestry.

Work environment

The student will be working at the Ottawa Research and Development Division. Given the COVID-19 restrictions, a remote “work-at-home” arrangement could be made.

The student studies will be at the University of Saskatchewan. The student work term permits that the tasks be performed from either Saskatchewan or remote work although the position is located in Ottawa. However, the student may have to travel to Ottawa during his internship.
