Work environment

This position reports to a senior technician and must be able to work outside in the summer and to work extended hours during certain parts of the year. The individual will participate in seeding, plot maintenance, harvest, cleaning of grain, packaging of seed for analysis and seed set up for planting. This job requires the ability to operate equipment and work outside in varying weather conditions. This site conducts irrigation work and there is some involvement in using this equipment. Travel is limited. There is exposure to dust pollen and noise and the incumbent must to be able to do this work which may require the use of personal protective equipment. The successful candidate must be able lift and carry samples and participate in a range of activities supporting wheat genetic enhancement.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent is to fill :
-One (1) indeterminate position in Brandon, Manitoba
-Four (4) term positions in Brandon, Manitoba
-One (1) anticipatory term position in Lacombe, Alberta
-One (1) anticipatory term position in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures as well as various linguistic requirements.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in the operation of plot scale (for example harvesters, seeders, sprayers) and/or farm equipment (for example tractors, combine, farm trucks).
Experience working with field crops and weed species.
Experience in processing seed (e.g. cleaning) and/or soil (e.g. collecting) samples.

Pesticide Applicator’s License issued by Manitoba for field application or greenhouse application.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust and noise).

Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 25kg).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License issued by the Manitoba Agriculture within eighteen months of appointment.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Forklift Operator’s License issued by a provincially certified agency within one year of appointment.
