Under the general direction of the Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS) Head of Operations, design, develop, construct, test, calibrate, assemble, install, operate and maintain networks of remote geophysical observatories and instruments at field service sites across Canada, including extreme north, and overseas. Monitor the transmission of live data from remote observatories to CHIS data acquisition hubs in Ottawa and BC and take immediate corrective measures when required.
The intent of this selection process is to staff one position in Sidney and to create a pool of qualified candidates for anticipatory need in Yellowknife and Ottawa.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual (Imperative and/or Non-Imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirement, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

• A secondary school diploma and completion of an acceptable training program in electronics technology or the employer-approved alternative.
The employer-approved alternatives is as follows: An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Note: Normally, an acceptable training program in electronics technology involves the completion of two to three years of post-secondary study in this subject.
EXPERIENCE:
• Significant* and extensive** experience working as an electronic technologist or technician Operation and maintenance of advanced analog and digital test and measurement devices (such as spectrum analyzer, digital signal generator, VSAT measuring devices, or other engineering test equipment).
• Design, development and repair of electronic equipment, such as working prototypes, monitoring instruments communication devices and power supplies including AC and photovoltaic.
• Testing and evaluating electronic equipment or instrumentation and documenting results for presentation.
• Advanced use of computer software, such as standard serial and IP communication and office automation packages, logging, reporting, inventory, shipping and client-servers based systems.
*Significant will be assessed on the basis of the scope, recent nature, complexity and diversity of the work performed.
**Extensive is defined as at least 3 years of experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Willing and able to do field work, mostly in remote locations (including extreme North in Canada), for up to 3 months a year in durations up to 5 weeks.
• Willing and able to drive field vehicles (including trucks and all-terrain vehicles).
• Willing and able to lift heavy objects, for example car batteries, during field work.
• Willing and able to use a variety of hand and power tools in assembly of mechanical and electronic systems.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Medical certificate.
• For Positions in Yellowknife, must be willing and able to relocate to this location.
