We are seeking a Research Biologist with expertise and experience in the field of biological nitrogen fixation. The successful candidate will lead independent research projects (under the guidance of Research Scientist) and implement existing and new projects focused on Crop Biotechnology.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading independent research projects (under guidance of AAFC Research Scientist) focused on development of crops with new agronomic traits, including nitrogen fixation in non-legume crops.
- Design and conduct experiments to generate and characterize new crop varieties with innovative attributes for sustainable agriculture, including cell/tissue in vitro culture and plant regeneration upon selection, DH production and breeding, molecular and biochemical analyses, physiological and agricultural evaluation.
- Maintain quality control and troubleshooting to ensure accurate results.
- Preparation of reports, proposals and research papers.
- Manage laboratory operations related to the program.
- Coordinating technical assistance and students allocated to the studies.
- Provision of advice to research scientists, management and industry partners.
- Design and conduct experiments on nitrogen fixation.
Immediate need: Research Biologist - Nitrogen fixation (position 1) - 1 full time temporary position - 2 year term.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar permanent or temporary positions.

• Graduation with a M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in biology or plant sciences with specialization in plant biology, molecular biology, plant biotechnology, or other specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

• Experience providing technical support and leading projects in a research or laboratory environment.
• Experience conducting research in plant molecular biology including DNA/RNA extraction and quantitative PCR.
• Experience presenting research outcomes and writing reports or scientific manuscripts.
• Experience working and conducting research studies on nitrogen fixation.
• Experience conducting plant gDNA analyses using Southern blotting and/or ddPCR.
• Experience in protein biochemistry, including conducting protein extraction, PAGE, Western blotting and enzymatic assays.
• Documented scientific productivity/recognition in the form of authorship/editorship of research results in recognized scientific journals, and published reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from scientific research.
• Experience with nitrogen fixation methodology.
• Experience working and conducting research studies with small grain cereals (wheat/triticale).
• Experience in plant cell/tissue culture and plant regeneration.
