Duties

Responsibility and challenges of the position:
CanmetMINING, Natural Resources Canada has received funding for a two-year research project to support responsible resource development by advancing risk assessment as they relate to Critical minerals. This project will aim to fill data gaps related to Lithium fate and effects in aquatic environments. Specifically, to develop knowledge in regards to the ecotoxicity and solubility/partitioning of Lithium in aquatic ecosystems.

This two-year MSc project will consist of laboratory experimentation conducted at CanmetMINING laboratories in Ottawa.

This project will involve:
1) Conducting toxicity tests with algae, invertebrates and fish to determine chronic toxicity endpoints for Lithium
2) Conducting laboratory simulations to understand the transformation/dissolution of Lithium in aquatic media
3) Investigating toxicity modifying factors for lithium (e.g. DOC, hardness etc.)

The student will be the primary contributor to the research work outputs, which may include technical reports, scientific journal articles and conference presentations. The position also includes planning, identifying resource needs for the development and completion of the research activities. Note that any Intellectual Property created from carrying out this research will rest with Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada as represented by the Minister of Natural Resources.

Work environment

The MSc position will be co-supervised through CanmetMINING, Ottawa, ON and the Department of Biology, University of Ottawa, ON. The student will join an interdisciplinary group engaged in leading edge research and can take advantage of the numerous opportunities to gain valuable field/lab experience.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Note: Applied research must be a requirement of graduation

Candidates must possess by the start date (April 2022) a BSc in science with specializations in environmental chemistry, aquatic toxicology, biology, ecology, zoology or geochemistry.

Currently enrolled in or be willing to enrol in the MSc in Chemical and Environmental Toxicology program at University of Ottawa. For applicants not currently enrolled, acceptance into the programs is subject to approval of the Department of Biology as well as the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at University of Ottawa.

BSc in science field related to environmental chemistry, aquatic toxicology, biology, zoology, ecology or geochemistry.

A 75% grade average upon completion of BSc

Meets the requirements for enrolment in the MSc Chemical and Environmental Toxicology program at University of Ottawa and is able to be accepted into this program.

Degree equivalency

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Candidates must have prior laboratory experience in aquatic toxicology, ecology or related field
Candidates must have completed 3rd year Chemistry courses
Candidates must be willing to work on weekends and holidays if needed.
Candidates must be willing to conduct their laboratory work based in Ottawa.
Candidates must have up to date First aid or be willing to obtain First aid by April 2022
Once admitted to the academic program MSc students are eligible for Graduate Teaching Assistant positions as full-time students during the two years of the program.
