Duties

Research is conducted to enhance the environmental performance of agricultural production systems, and to maintain or access new international markets. Research includes:
• Studying and monitoring changes in soils, crop conditions, land use and land management (from watershed to national scales) using satellite technologies and integrated modeling.
• Developing new methods and technologies to produce and analyze data describing soil, land use and climate for agricultural areas in Canada to improve agricultural land management, land use planning and policy development.
• Systems-based research and modeling to understand the effects and trade-offs of management practices at the field, farm and watershed scale on soil microorganisms, nutrients, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and airborne and emerging contaminants to assess and mitigate agricultural impacts on the environment (e.g., air and water), public health and agricultural productivity.

Intent of the process

*Preference will be given to employees currently occupying a position within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.*

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry, geography, earth sciences, environment, agriculture or some other science relevant to the position.

EXPERIENCE
Experience processing, managing and analyzing geophysical information and data.

Experience using standard data management procedures to collect, organize, retrieve, and maintain information.

Experience in the use of image processing or statistical software for the analysis of spatial and non-spatial datasets.

Experience working with programming and scripting languages to process and analyze large datasets.

Experience in integrating and synthesizing scientific information from widely dispersed sources.

Experience in the use of environmental accounting or process-based or statistical models applied to agricultural or environmental monitoring and forecasting.

Degree equivalency

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

EDUCATION
Post-graduate diploma, Masters or PhD from a recognized university or Institute of Technology, with acceptable specialization in geography, climatology, earth sciences, environment, agriculture, geomatics or some other discipline relevant to the position.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in the adaptation and application of meteorology, climatology or geomatics methodologies to monitor, analyze, model, report or forecast weather or climate.

Experience using data to create integrated information, tools and map products.

Experience preparing and compiling results from technical documents, reports, research papers or scientific presentations related to agriculture and the environment.

Experience in applying project management principles.

Experience in applying the principles and methods of agri-environmental sciences or specifically Canadian agricultural operations (animal husbandry or agronomy).

Experience with fieldwork in applied soil science.
