Duties

A person is required to aid in the analysis of carbohydrate structures of plant, fungi, and seaweed cell walls, and to determine how they are modified by microorganisms, using a series of approaches in a high-throughput, fast-paced glycomics service lab. Activities will support a wide range of collaborations in Canada, the USA, and Europe. The successful candidate will use glycomics methods to study how carbohydrates change during treatments (e.g. digestion, disease, genetic engineering, environmental conditions); current projects are supporting priority areas for Canadian agriculture, including climate change, alternatives to antimicrobials, circular production systems, and Indigenous partnerships. The successful candidate will work closely with a AAFC Chemist and within a dynamic team. Analytical duties will involve a high degree of repetition, large sample numbers, and analytical sensitivity; the successful candidate will need to value and be able to demonstrate reproducibility and accuracy in their work.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: 1 full-time temporary position (1 year).

A pool of qualified and/or partially qualified candidates may be established and used to staff similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis.

B.Sc. degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field.

Degree equivalency

Experience providing technical support in a laboratory environment.
Experience handling biological (e.g. animal tissues, feces, plant tissues) or environmental samples (e.g. fermentation products, soils, sediments).

M.Sc. degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in chemistry or biochemistry.

Degree equivalency

Experience with instrumental analysis of carbohydrate structure (e.g. monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides) or other biomolecules (e.g. proteins, lipids, lignin).
Experience working in an analytical chemistry lab.
Experience of sample derivatization, purification, and fractionation.
Experience performing gas chromatography (GC-FID, GC-MS) or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
Experience using relevant data analysis software and completing analyses of data.
