Work environment

The RCMP requires an experienced mechanic with proven ability to work with a range of vehicles according to stringent best-practice standards. The right candidate will work in a team to ensure all police vehicle fit-ups activities are carried out on time and at an exceptional standard. The work environment is in a garage setting and mostly performs equipment change overs from retired police vehicles to new ones. GL employees work a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday with some flexibility to work variable start times or completing their hours of work over 8 or 9 days instead of 10 in a two-week period.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff multiple positions for a 12-month period with likelihood of extension.

A qualified pool will be established and may be used for future permanent or temporary vacancies.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

CERTIFICATION:
Possession of a valid Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson Certificate as an Automotive Service Technician.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Recent* experience in the installation of automotive equipment such as radios, stereos and security equipment.
2. Recent* experience in performing repairs to automotive systems such as electrical systems, electronic systems and vehicle computer systems.
3. Recent* experience with routine automotive maintenance such as brake repairs, engine repairs, tune up and chassis repair.

*Note: Recent experience is defined as performance of duties within the past 2 years.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

ASSET CRITERIA:
1. Recent* experience installing mobile communication equipment.
2. Recent* experience in welding and metal fabricating techniques.
3. Recent* experience using a computer for garage management programs and vehicle repair manuals.
4. Recent* hands-on experience in repairing within the range of the Journeyman’s certification and direct experience in the field of first responder vehicle fit-up such as, Police, Ambulance and Fire.
5. Recent* hands-on experience in repairing hybrid and electric vehicles.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

*A copy of the driver’s abstract will be requested during the assessment phase and may be requested again upon successful completion of the security clearance process for the successful candidate.

5. Interested persons must meet the essential qualifications to be appointed to the position, in a manner determined by the Selection Board. A person may be appointed to the position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications, operational requirements or organizational needs. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

Once established, the qualified pool will be valid for a period of 12 months and may be extended.

The successful applicant may be eligible for the Isolated Post Allowance and related benefits.

Please note that within the context of this selection process, travel costs/expenses will not be reimbursed. Consequently, candidates will be responsible for travel costs.

Random selection may be used to identify which applicants will be assessed or appointed in this appointment process.

If a qualified candidate has been selected and appointed on an indeterminate basis from the established pool, they will be removed from the pool. If a candidate is selected for a specified period (including term, acting, or assignment/secondment) appointment, they will remain in the pool for future offers.

This process and the resulting pool will only be used to staff positions in the RCMP.

Any information provided by a candidate through their application or assessment that is deemed to be incorrect or fraudulent will be eliminated from further consideration.

Experience qualifications will be assessed upon application. Further confirmation or assessment may be conducted through reference checks.

The requirement for employees to be fully vaccinated applies whether they are teleworking, working remotely or working on-site. This is a condition of employment and it applies to indeterminate (permanent), determinate (term), casual, and student hiring. Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
