As per the new Policy on COVID-19 Vaccination for the Core Public Administration Including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, federal public servants in the Core Public Administration and members of the RCMP must attest to their vaccination status. The requirement for employees to be fully vaccinated applies whether they are teleworking, working remotely or working on-site. As part of a research program, the incumbent will lead independent research projects (under the guidance of Research Scientist) focused on Pulse crop pathology.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading independent research projects (under guidance of AAFC Research Scientist) focused on epidemiology and risk prediction of root diseases of pulse crops.
- Develop and/or improve protocols for sensitive and accurate quantification of soilborne pathogens in soil for disease risk prediction.
- Coordination and travel to field sites for plant and soil sampling
- Manage laboratory and field operations related to the program.
- Preparation of reports, proposals and research papers.
- Maintain quality control and troubleshooting to ensure accurate results.
Immediate need: 1 full-time temporary position (2 years).
A pool of qualified and/or partially qualified candidates may be established and used to staff similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis.

Graduation with an acceptable Master’s or Doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in biological sciences with a specialization in plant pathology or other specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Experience conducting research in plant pathology such as culturing and production of inoculum from cultures, isolation and identification of soilborne pathogens, or assessing host plants for disease responses.
Experience performing DNA-based techniques for quantification of plant pathogens.
Experience managing research projects which could involve: setting priorities, organizing work schedule, basic supervisory techniques, communications and/or safety protocols.
Experience writing or assisting in the preparation of reports, manuscripts or presentations.
Experience conducting research with soilborne pathogens, such as using techniques to extract microbial DNA from soil, and assessment of soil environmental conditions related to measuring inoculum potential.
Experience performing research on interactions between plant roots, pathogens and soil environment leading to disease development.
