The Industry Services Division of the CGC introduced a Grain Inspector Development Program (GIDP) in early 2014. The GIDP is an, up to, 4-year development program to qualify as a full working level Grain Inspector (PI-CGC-03). The development program is based on a modular curriculum of both classroom training and working practicum.
A Grain Inspector trainee will develop the ability to perform the preliminary inspection and analysis of grain samples; grading of grain samples; draw representative grain samples; determine the protein content on samples of wheat; maintain records of inspection data and inspect equipment; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Grain Inspector trainees will be expected to develop the required technical /behavioral competencies, within the four (4) year program as they progress from Trainee (PI-CGC-01) to Intermediate (PI-CGC-02) to full working level Grain Inspector (PI-CGC-03). An individual’s development will be constantly monitored against the program’s competency standards and expectations which, once demonstrated, a Trainee will be promoted to the next level. A Trainee’s development of the GIDP competencies will be based on an individual’s effort and capacity to learn as measured and reflected throughout the program so that progress through to the full working level may be accomplished within the four (4) year maximum timeframe. As such, a Trainee will be on probation for the duration of the development program and may be released at any time for failure to demonstrate the technical / behavioral competencies required and not meeting the goals and expectations of the program.
Successful completion of all GIDP components will be a condition of employment for all participants upon acceptance of a Grain Inspector trainee position.
Grain Inspector Trainees will work in a heavy industrial environment with exposure to moving railcars, automated equipment, dust, noise, bird excrement, heights and rodents. Employees must use personal protective equipment (supplied) as required for safety purposes. Any known allergies must be controlled through the use of masks and/or medication and must not impinge on ability to perform the job.
The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is a federal department responsible to ensure the integrity and market ability of grain for the domestic and international grain trade, from producer to global customer.

This process will be used to staff three (3) full-time indeterminate position in Montréal, QC.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar indeterminate training positions in Montréal, QC.
The number of trainee positions will vary from location to location based on operational needs and the intake capacity of the development program.
A candidate may only write the assessments once as their test results will be valid for a period of 180 days and will be retained for similar processes at different locations. Assessments may be administered at different locations.

• Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime, FREQUENTLY as required.
• Ability and willingness to travel, FREQUENTLY as required, including on short notice.
• Ability and willingness to work in and around moving equipment in an indoor/outdoor industrial environment.
Reliability Status security clearance
• Successful completion of the development program to the full working level of Grain Inspector (PI-CGC- 03) within the maximum of the four (4) year probationary period (seasonal employment excepted).
• Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain, in good standing, the appropriate security level clearance for access to any work related site.
• Valid driver's license OR personal mobility in the time and manner normally associated with possession and use of a valid driver's license.
• Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
• Ability and willingness to be exposed to grain dust / soil, and to outdoor conditions in an industrial environment. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication, and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.

The starting salary for this position will be $49,230.
