Wildfires are a natural element of Canadian forest ecosystems, but increasingly threaten communities, resources, and infrastructure across the country. The Fire Science Analyst (FSA) uses skills in data collection and curation, data analysis, model building, GIS, and data visualization to study the wildfire environment, wildfire behaviour/impacts and fire management. Working in a team with other researchers and technicians, the FSA applies research methods, collects data, undertakes data analysis and modelling, writes technical reports, and prepares material for peer-reviewed papers. Work may include deploying, operating, or maintaining specialized measurement and sensing equipment in field and laboratory settings.

Intent of the process

A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures , various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position (e.g., forestry, geography, environmental sciences).

Note:
1.The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EX1: Significant experience in analysing and interpreting large or complex datasets
EX 2: Experience in spatial analysis in geographic information system (GIS) software
EX 3: Experience contributing to scientific papers or technical reports
EX 4: Significant experience using at least one statistical programming language: Python, R, SAS, MatLab

*Significant means at least two years professionally employed in the field or graduate studies in the abovementioned academic fields.
