Extreme heat events are posing a growing public health risk in Canada. Climate change can mean longer and more intense heat waves that can be dangerous for the health of Canadians. Health Canada’s Extreme Heat Program aims to protect the health of Canadians from extreme heat.
The successful candidate will lead a research project to conduct a systematic review and analysis of media articles from major extreme heat events to document the myriad of impacts to public health and health systems.
The successful candidate will also assist the Heat Division’s Senior Science Advisor with other projects to translate scientific understanding to practically address how to protect the health of Canadians from extreme heat.
In particular, the student will support the Health Canada’s Extreme Heat Program with the following tasks:
• Provide scientific and technical advice to support emergency response activities to extreme heat in Canada.
• Review documents from stakeholders and provide technical comments.
• Author plain language evidence-based synthesis documents and memos with practical recommendations for local and regional health authorities and Health Canada’s management.
The Climate Change and Innovation Bureau is the focal point within Health Canada for coordinating research and disseminating information about the impacts of climate change on the health and well-being of Canadians, as well as building capacity across the country to address these impacts. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/climat/index-eng.php
The work undertaken in the office includes facilitating knowledge development through scientific research, understanding current coping and adaptive capacity, promoting climate change and health adaptation strategies, and dissemination of information and tools to partners.

Information on language requirements
Education:
• The Student must be currently enrolled in a PhD Program in a recognized post-secondary academic institution with full-time status in one of the following specializations: public health, environmental health and epidemiology, with a focus on qualitative research and climate change adaptation studies is an asset.
• Given the student’s role in supporting the Extreme Heat Program’s Science Advisor, it’s important the student have knowledge of epidemiological and physiological principles.
Qualifications:
• Experience writing plain-language public health research papers.
• Demonstrable ability for translating complex science into plain language and actionable
recommendations.
Competencies:
• Outstanding qualitative and quantitative research, analysis, writing and oral communication skills
