The successful candidate will investigate the transport and fate of microplastics and the associated chemicals from source regions to the Canadian Arctic, as part of a funded collaboration between the Air Quality Research Division (AQRD) and the University of Toronto.
The work is expected to form part of the M.Sc. studies of the successful candidate.
The work will be done in collaboration with Professor Miriam Diamond of the University of Toronto.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is a science-based department, and we provide the science and technology information needed so that Canadians can make informed decisions about the environment. In addition, Environment and Climate Change Canada's science and technology work helps us to protect and conserve our air, water, wildlife and spaces.
The selected student will conduct work mainly at the Environment and Climate Change Canada Egbert facility (Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments, 6248 8th Line, Egbert, ON) in the laboratories of the Air Quality Processes Research Section under the guidance and supervision of a scientific research team.
Occasional work may be performed at the University of Toronto.
The student must be enrolled, with full-time student status, in a Masters program at the University of Toronto to expedite collaboration for the described research.

Education:
Graduation with an acceptable undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in science, engineering, or other field related to the duties of the position.

Experience:
1. Experience in the collection and processing environmental samples, not limited to air, water, sediment and zooplankton
2. Experience in the collection of environmental samples, not limited to air, water, sediment and zooplankton, from remote mobile platforms
3. Experience in training students on sample collection methods
English essential

Knowledge of laboratory methodologies to prepare and clean sampling equipment for microplastic and associated chemicals
