Duties

About the role:
We are looking for a leader who will work with a dynamic team to support partners and innovators in strengthening the innovation ecosystem in Alberta, with a focus on the northern half of the province. The Manager, Innovation Ecosystems will lead a team that works to grow priority economic sectors and develops and implements funding programs that support business innovation, economic development and diversification in Alberta. Priority sectors include clean technology, life sciences, digital industries, agriculture value-added, and advanced manufacturing.

Western Economic Diversification Canada has a wide-ranging mandate for economic development, diversification and advocacy of Western Canadian interests in national economic policy making. Intent of the process

The indent is to fill one indeterminate (permanent) full-time vacancy.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level. This process may be used for various positions and tenures, various locations, security requirements, language requirements and conditions of employment.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization such as commerce, business administration, economics, accounting, finance or other specialty relevant to the position.

At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience, may serve as an alternative to meet the education standard.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Significant experience building successful organizations or successful initiatives that support business innovation or economic development.

• Significant experience preparing, assessing or managing complex funding proposals or projects.

• Experience in program delivery.

• Experience analyzing complex economic development programs or issues, including preparing briefing materials and providing strategic advice to senior management.

• Experience providing client service to internal and/or external clients.

*Significant experience is defined as having the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be acquired with the performance of full time duties for a period of three years or more.
**Complex issues are defined as issues that are ambiguous, poorly defined, and require input, expertise, and analysis from multiple sectors, organizations, or disciplines.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Public sector experience delivering economic development funding programs.

• Experience managing financial and human resources.

• Recent experience (within the last three years) working with stakeholders to develop Alberta’s innovation ecosystem.

• Depth, breadth and scope of experience in any one or combination of the experience requirements.

Organizational Needs:
• In support of achieving a diverse workforce, consideration may be given to candidates self-identifying as belonging to one of the following Employment Equity groups: Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and women.

Operational Requirements:
• Willingness to work overtime when required.
• Willingness to travel occasionally
