Duties

The Characterization Laboratory provides analytical support for energy related research projects conducted at the CanmetENERGY research facilities in Ottawa and by external clients. As a member of the analytical team, the candidate will help with the delivery of analytical services to clients (research scientists, research engineers, technicians/technologists).

About one third of the candidate’s time will be dedicated toward using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) data to help prioritize work of Characterization Lab analysts and to prepare reports of analyses for clients. The remainder of the candidate’s time will concentrate on physical and chemical analyses. Specific analytical responsibilities include, conducting physical and chemical analyses following standard test methods, calibrating and maintaining analytical equipment, assisting in the development of modified test methods and in the assessment of existing test methods.

The types of samples analyzed by the Characterization Laboratory include petroleum products, lubricants, bio-oils, coal, coke, combustion residues, biomass, refuse–derived fuels and catalysts. Examples of analyses that would be conducted by the candidate are: water determination by Karl-Fischer titration, kinematic viscosity, density, pH, Total Acid number, sulfur determination, calorific value, proximate analyses and sample preparation.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. Intent of the process

This is an anticipatory process to staff one EG-02 position for a period of 1 year.

A pool of candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the EG-02 group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

• Successful completion of a two-year (or more) diploma program from a recognized post-secondary institution in chemical technology or biotechnology.

Degree equivalency

• Significant and recent* experience performing lab work in a chemical or biological technology (or similar) setting (experience acquired within a relevant diploma program will also be accepted).
• Experience in working with hazardous chemicals such as: concentrated acids, organic solvents and others
• Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word to organize data and prepare reports.
• Experience using computer software to run analytical equipment.

* Significant and recent experience is a minimum of 1 year of experience acquired within the past 5 years.
