Duties

The successful candidates will advance the understanding of ship stability and motions in extreme environments. They will investigate worldwide developments in science and technology in order to identify and assess trends in the field of research. The successful candidates will report their research results through reports and verbal presentations.

Work environment

Defence Research and Development Canada is the national leader in defence science and technology. We work with partners in academia, government and industry and with Canada’s allies to develop and deliver new technical solutions and advice to the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, other federal departments, and the safety and security communities.

Warship Performance leads the science and technology of marine platforms, both surface and sub-surface.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff two temporary position for research affiliate program students. This pool could be used to fill similar or identical positions within the Department of National Defense at Defence Research and Development Canada.

Information you must provide

Your résumé.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

The student must be currently enrolled or willing to enroll in a Master's or Doctorate program with a specialization in engineering, naval architecture, physics, or engineering physics

Grade point average (GPA) must be at least 80%.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the application of analytical, numerical or experimental methods to rigid-body dynamics.

Experience in the application of analytical, numerical or experimental methods to hydrodynamics.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

Ability to communicate effectively orally, including the communication of scientific concepts.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing, including the communication of scientific concepts.

Experience in the field of marine vehicle dynamics.

Experience in the development of simulations of complex systems.

Experience conducting experiments or sea trials pertaining to ship motion.

Experience in the analysis of experimental/simulation data.

Experience in the development of algorithms or software for data processing, engineering or scientific purposes.

May be required to travel for short durations (e.g. for meetings)
May be required to participate in other consulting and research and development tasks, as and when required.

Conditions of employment

Ability and willingness to adhere to safety procedures including, but not limited to wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
