Duties

The Abitibi greenstone belt is one of the richest regions on the planet in terms of gold content. Gold occurs in different contexts that varies in time and space and can be hosted in various types and styles of deposits (e.g., orogenic quartz-carbonate veins, intrusion-associated stock work or disseminated, volcanogenic massive sulphides, etc.). Most of these known deposits occur within the southernmost Abitibi greenstone belt. However, the central and northern sections of the Abitibi, despite being less well explored, are also highly prospective for a variety of gold deposit types, including the Urban-Barry belt and the Windfall area (e.g., quartz-carbonate-albite (±tourmaline) veins, disseminated sulphide zones, stratiform lenses of massive sulphides). The volcanic rock assemblages in the Urban-Barry belt range from ~2791 Ma to 2707 Ma and are reworked within numerous deformation corridors, defining complex structural domains. Elucidating the timing, genesis, and factors that control the mineralization of specific deposits within the Urban-Berry belt will provide crucial answers that will improve the metallogenic models of this emerging area and the rest of the Abitibi.

The aim of this study will be to use a multidisciplinary approach, including detailed field mapping, core logging, structural analysis, lithogeochemistry, and isotopic analysis for defining the nature of the host rocks, characterize the geological and structural controls (and their relative importance) on the auriferous mineralization, and document the mineralogy, the geochemical signature, and distribution of mineralized zones and their associated hydrothermal alteration. Research funding including a study grant will be provided through the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) program. The selected student will be based in Québec City and fieldwork will take place in Abitibi. Laboratory facilities at the INRS and the GSC in Ottawa, Ontario will be at the disposal of the student(s) for most of the analytical work.
