Duties

The incumbent is responsible to provide the technical, logistical and analytical support for the Aquatic Sciences projects and studies that are carried out in the field and in the laboratory to support the conservation of fisheries and oceans resources and the scientific work in the marine environment.

He (or she) implements and participates in the development of standardized protocols for the sampling of fishery catches in support of the fisheries resources’ assessment; he (or she) assesses, adapts and proposes adjustments to protocols or special projects.

He (or she) recommends, provides technical advice, information and scientific data to resources’ managers and Department’s scientists as well as to other federal regulatory agencies, professional fishers, industries working in the aquatic environment, provincial agencies, First Nations, international organizations and the general public.

A pool of qualified candidates may established in order to staff similar positions at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, in the Quebec Region.

Post-secondary degree in a field related to the position to staff, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or pertinent working experience.

Degree equivalency

Good* experience in the treatment of aquatic organisms samples and associated biological data.

*Good experience is defined as one year of experience.

Diploma or collegial studies completed successfully in natural sciences.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the conduct and supervision of commercial fisheries catches sampling activities at port or at sea.

Experience of scientific work during sampling campaigns conducted at sea, at port or in fishing plants.

Experience in the acquisition and safeguarding of scientific data.

Experience in the care and custody of scientific equipment.

The incumbent may have to work alone in the laboratory as well as in the field, and also in isolated locations.
Must work in various environments (e.g. fishery products processing plants, wharves, vessels, small boats and in limited spaces) often busy in limited time periods.
In the field, the weather conditions are often changing and sometimes bad.

Knowledge of the standards and methods related to the sampling and the preservation of marine organisms;
Knowledge of the methods used to collect biological data;
Knowledge of the Quebec commercial fisheries main stakeholders;
Basic knowledge in biology related to the marine organisms and the marine ecology;
Basic knowledge related to microcomputer science.

Ability to conduct the program and oversee commercial catch sampling personnel in an area in accordance with established plans;
Ability to analyze in order to solve technical problems and recommend solutions;
Ability to communicate orally;
Ability to communicate in writing;
Ability to develop and maintain good relations with stakeholders in the field of fisheries.
