Intent of the process

Stream 1 - Maintenance Craftsperson
The Maintenance Craftsperson position is location in Edmonton. The intent of this process is to fill one position on an permanent basis with the Real Property and Workplace Services Branch, with the Corporate Management and Services Sector.

Stream 2 - Facility Maintenance Mechanic
The Facility Maintenance Mechanic position is location in Resolute. The intent of this process is to fill one position on an permanent basis with the Polar Continental Shelf Program, with the Lands and Minerals Sector. The incumbent will be required to travel on a regular basis to various Arctic locations (such as the Polar Continental Shelf Program (PCSP)’s facility in Resolute, Nunavut) for several cycles of approximately 6 weeks each during the year. When working in the Arctic, at the PCSP facility, the incumbent will be working 7 days per week, 10 hours per day, accumulating overtime hours to cover time off. All travel costs from the incumbent’s home to the Arctic will be arranged and covered by PCSP.

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada and in the Federal Public Service with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), to staff positions with various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Both streams:
A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Stream 1 only:
Possess a valid Alberta or Interprovincial Journeyman’s Certificate in one of the following trades: Plumbing, Millwright, Carpentry, or Electrical.

Both streams:
Experience in the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment in support of institution with mechanical, electrical, fire protection and energy management systems.
Experience in general labour work such as light construction, renovation, drywall, repairs, painting or flooring repairs.
Experience in the safe operation and repair of a variety of a variety of shop tools such as welding and pipe threading machines, band, table, chop saws or drill press.
Experience in operating small equipment such as skid steer, fork lift or weed eater.

Stream 2 only:
Experience with Building Automation Systems.
Experience in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Both streams:
Possess a valid Alberta or Interprovincial Journeyman’s Certificate in one of the following: Fourth Class Power Engineering; Building Environmental Systems Operator Class II;

Stream 2 only:
Experience with low pressure steam boilers and steam sterilizing units.
Experience working in an isolated post.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

Both streams:
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration units or auxiliary pumps or re-circulation systems or electric motors or HVAC auxiliary equipment.
Knowledge of the applicable preventative maintenance procedures of mechanical systems.

Stream 2 only:
Knowledge of the operation of generator power systems.
Knowledge of the operation of heating systems such as boilers and furnaces

Both streams:
Ability to perform running maintenance, minor repair and troubleshoot various types of equipment such as fan, pumps and controls.
Ability to read and perform tasks outlined in technical manuals.
Ability to perform general scheduled building maintenance (eg. water fountains filter change and cleaning, cleaning out the sump pits, overhead door maintenance)
Ability to multi task, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Willing and able to work in isolated high-Arctic locations for extended periods of time.
Possess a valid First Aid certificate.
Undergo pre-employment medical suitability assessment for working in an isolated location.
