Duties

The Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO), Natural Resources Canada, is looking for a graduate student (in PhD study) for a research project on earth observation for urban flood mapping and risk analysis. The successful applicant will be focused on development of automated methodology for shadow extraction in urban areas, to support precise urban floodwater mapping for disaster response. The student will develop the methodology using high-resolution image data collected from various sources. The study areas are in Canadian metropolitans. This position is for a one-year.

The student should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals.

Work environment

The image processing and methodology development will be conducted at Western University.

Intent of the process

Student will be hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) with the purpose to accomplish research and complete a thesis or dissertation. Duration of the RAP for Doctorate Students is 1-3 years. Extensions may be possible.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:
• Have successfully completed a Master's Degree (for a Ph.D. proposal) and have a strong background in high resolution remote sensing image processing, computer programming for automated methodology development, and remote sensing for dense built-up urban areas, with an interest in urban flood mapping.

• Currently enrolled or will need to enroll in a graduate program in Western University.

Degree equivalency

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Prior research as documented with conference presentations or peer-reviewed
publications.

English or French

• Ability to program computer codes to facilitate image data processing and information extraction,
• Ability to process high resolution image data of urban areas,
• Ability to analyze and integrate geospatial information,
• Ability to demonstrate good writing and oral skills.
