Duties

The Public Health Nurse, and Home and Community Care Nurse collaborates in the delivery of comprehensive health programs which include promoting, protecting and preserving the health of First Nations populations on reserve. Health Care programs are designed in partnership with community members and leaders to promote environments that support good health. The Registered Nurse adheres to the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice; promoting health, building individual and community capacity, building relationships, facilitating access and equity, and demonstrating professional responsibility and accountability.

The maintenance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally safe care are paramount in these areas of practice.

The roles and activities of Registered Nurses in these First Nations communities include:

Public Health - responsibilities such as communicable disease control, well child clinics, pre-natal and post-natal programs, school health, health promotion, disease and injury prevention

and/or

Home and Community Care - responsibilities such case management, chronic disease management, wound care, post-operative care in client homes

Our vision is to support and empower Indigenous peoples to independently deliver services and address the socio-economic conditions in their communities.

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations people for the communities of Alexis, Enoch, Duncan, Saddle Lake, Sturgeon Lake, and Sunchild, Alberta. In these positions you would enjoy autonomous, varied work providing Public health and Home and Community Care services while immersed in the diverse cultures of Canada’s First Nations.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this poster is to fill up to 8 positions in Alberta.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various security requirements, various conditions of employment, various tenures (acting,assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate), and in various locations within Indigenous Services Canada.

Education
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience
Independent clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN) in one of any combination ofthe following 3 areas:
i. Community Health Nursing;
ii. Emergency Care;
and/or
iii. Acute Care

Operational Requirements

• Travel to rural locations on gravel roads
• Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion

• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• CPR Certificate, Healthcare Provider Level C, renewed annually
• Continuous professional registration, without conditions or restrictions, with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta
