The challenges, task and responsibilities are not trivial since the student must independently develop a proposed future research and bioenvironmental monitoring and assessment program based on analysis of existing (baseline) data. Research is required since the proposed program will need to include the appropriate biotic (wildlife and country foods species) and abiotic samples and the appropriate methods for sample collection and preservation that will result in the successful implementation of the monitoring program. The student must independently develop this research and monitoring program and be responsible for the dissemination of a draft of the proposed program for comment and further development. The responsibility is high since the research conducted by the student needs to result in a proposal that supports the assessment of the potential influence of run-of-the-river hydroelectric developments in northern environments, which represents a gap in current understanding, but is of urgent importance in the face of a global biodiversity decline and concerns over the preservation of northern food safety and security, culture and livelihood. This will impose a high level of responsibility on the student with respect to the credibility of the work completed.
The student will conduct analyses of existing data collected from environmental monitoring programs conducted around Inukjuak, Nunavik, and develop a proposed bioenvironmental monitoring and assessment program for the region. The proposed bioenvironmental monitoring and assessment program developed will include biotic and abiotic monitoring and sampling activities that will result in the generation of data and information that can test the following hypothesis: construction of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric dam on the Inukjuak River will not result in contamination of the local environment and biota once the dam completed. The proposed monitoring program is to be submitted to the principal investigator as part of the thesis program. The research and monitoring program developed will support high priority programs of the federal government including northern contaminants, Indigenous partnerships in science and One Health Programs.
