Duties

Under the direction of a Canadian Coast Guard Environmental Response Senior Response Officer, this position carries out environmental response duties in the marine environment as part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s federal mandate. This includes environmental emergency management activities and response activities in the field, preparedness and readiness activities, and carrying out administrative duties.

Embracing a proactive culture for 24/7 service to and for Canadians, the Canadian Coast Guard offers exciting sea-going and shore-based career opportunities in the delivery of critical maritime safety, security and response services; response to on-water and maritime incidents using a variety of vessels, hovercraft, helicopters, and small craft; and providing vital information and assistance to vessels, including navigation support, distress and safety communications and coordination of maritime trade. The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) environmental response program aims to reduce the impacts of marine pollution in Canadian waters on:
- public safety
- the environment
- the economy
We focus on being prepared and ensuring an appropriate responses for cleaning up marine spills.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff 3 positions on a full-time, indeterminate basis.

A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established from this selection process and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

- Successful completion of a secondary school diploma; or

Equivalent experience:

If you have on-the-job learning or other non-conventional training that you believe is equivalent to the secondary school diploma requirement, put it forward for consideration. The manager may accept a combination of education, training and/or experience in a related field as an alternative to the minimum secondary school diploma stated above.

Degree equivalency

- Experience in preparing and delivering training sessions and presentations (theoretical and technical);
- Experience in collecting and analyzing data to produce reports or technical documents using the Microsoft Office Suite, such as Word, Excel or Outlook;
- Experience in coordinating technical, scientific or operational activities in a maritime or land-based setting;

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

- Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant of the position (such as environment, maritime management, project management and any releveant fields of study);

Degree equivalency

- Experience in the planning and delivery of operational training and exercises;
- Experience working among teams, including working with people outside of your immediate team in order to realize common objectives;

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

- Willing and able to obtain medical certificate;
- Willing and able to travel on various means of transport including ships, small vessels and aircraft to remote locations and abroad, knowing that such travel may be frequent and seasonal;
- Willing and able to work overtime, be on call according to a schedule (day and night, seven days a week) and occasionally work weekends, in accordance with the pertinent collective agreement;
- Willing and able to work in potentially hazardous and /or adverse conditions such as those found in the marine environment and in remote locations;
- Willing and able to work in emergency situations;
- Willing and able to travel for extended periods on short notice;
- Willing and able to wear the Canadian Coast Guard uniform;
- Willing and able to wear CSA approved personal safety equipment related to the job.
