Duties

Science Advisors and Physical Scientists will work as part of a team responsible for improving national and international coordination of Ocean Science and Climate Change activities at DFO, providing stewardship of oceanographic data, supporting ocean modelling activities, and advancing science activities to improve our understanding of the impacts of climate change on our aquatic resources.

Stream 1: Senior Science Advisor
Key activities may include participating in collaborative ocean and climate change science initiatives with federal, academic and private sector partners; contributing to the implementation of a national ocean observing and monitoring program; providing support for, and participating in, national and international committees and working groups on ocean and climate change science; identifying climate change impacts and vulnerabilities and developing adaptation tools; and improving ocean forecasting in vulnerable coastal regions to inform Departmental decisions related to adaptive management of fisheries, oceans and coastal infrastructure.

Stream 2: Senior Physical Scientist
Key activities may include participating in collaborative ocean sciences initiatives with federal, academic and private sector partners; providing support for, and participating in, national and international committees and working groups on ocean science; data management, quality control, and archival; supporting the development and evaluation of numerical ocean models; developing products and tools for partners and clients, and responding to client requests; and developing and maintaining scientific tools and applications.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent is to fill various vacancies in positions located in Ottawa, Ontario and Dorval, Québec.

A pool of fully and/or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions, within Fisheries and Oceans Canada across the country with various language requirements, security requirements and tenures.

Education:
Both Streams
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in ocean sciences, biology, physics, geology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Both Streams
EX1: Significant experience* conducting scientific work or activities related to oceanography, aquatic ecosystems, climate change and/or another relevant environmental science.
EX2 Significant experience * working in scientific teams, committees or working groups related to oceanography, aquatic ecosystems, climate change and/or another relevant environmental science.
EX3: Significant experience * synthesizing and analyzing information related to oceanography, aquatic ecosystems, climate change and/or another relevant environmental science to provide advice or recommendations.
EX4: Significant experience* preparing and writing briefing material, presentations, technical documents and/or scientific papers on topics related to oceanography, aquatic ecosystems, climate change and/or another relevant environmental science
EX5: Experience supervising staff and managing financial resources.

Stream 2 Only
S2EX1: Experience using computer programming or scripting languages for the synthesis, assembly, management, or analysis of scientific data or information
S2EX2: Experience conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting data using statistical analytical techniques or tools associated with oceanography, or relevant scientific area

* Significant experience is defined as experience gained through a minimum of 5 years of full-time work in a relevant area of study. (Graduation from a recognized post-graduate program may be accepted as work experience).

Asset Qualifications

Experience:
Both Streams
AEX1: Experience with modern oceanographic data collection, monitoring, observation or dissemination technologies/instrumentation.
AEX2: Experience in the analysis of spatially or temporally variable oceanographic, meteorological, or other environmental data.
AEX3: Experience with oceanographic and/or climate modelling
AEX4: Experience working with collaborative programs, projects, or initiatives with multiple government departments, academic institutions and/or international organizations.

Stream 1 Only
AEX5: Experience contributing to and/or leading the development of strategic policy documents such as Memoranda to Cabinet, Budget submissions and/or Treasury Board Submissions.

Stream 2 Only
AEX6: Experience in scientific data management, including but not limited to tasks such as QA-QC of data to comply with standardized template(s), management of data archives, and creation of metadata
AEX7: Experience in using computer programming languages, such as, but not limited to Java, Python, Matlab, R or Fortran, for scientific data management, scientific data analysis, or delivery of scientific products.
AEX8: Experience in the development and deployment of scientific data products for distribution to the public.
