The nominee(s) will provide scientific and/or technical support within the Government of Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans. This process aims at creating a pool of candidates to staff various determinate (few weeks to several months), or indeterminate positions among the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute's research teams. Depending on the supervisors' needs, the nominee(s) will work in the field, aboard research or fishing vessels, or in a laboratory, including the Institute's seawater facilities. Fields of study are diversified, such as stock assessments, aquatic invasive species, aquaculture, biodiversity and aquatic ecosystem ecology, genomics, physics, aquatic chemistry and biochemistry.
We are located in Mont-Joli, at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, on the shores of the St. Lawrence Estuary. A recognized post-secondary degree in a field of biology, biochemistry or chemistry, wildlife management, or in a field of natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Work experience in the context of scientific projects carried out in the field or in a laboratory in biology, biochemistry or chemistry (EG-03 & EG-04).
Experience using a personal computer and common softwares such as MS Word and Excel (or equivalent) (EG-03 & EG-04).
Experience in providing advice on sampling methods, seawater system design, experiments planning or selection of equipment / devices, in the context of scientific projects carried out in the field or in the laboratory in the biological sciences (EG-04 only).
Experience in identification (taxonomy) of plankton (phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish egg and larvae).
Experience in identification (taxonomy) of algae.
Experience in identification (taxonomy) of invertebrates.
Experience in identification (taxonomy) of fishes.
Experience in identification (taxonomy) of marine mammals.
Experience in sampling or collecting organisms in the field.
Experience in planning of sampling or experiments in the field or laboratory.
Experience in conducting scientific work on water using small boats or medium or large vessels.
Experience with usual techniques for morphometric and other biological measurements.
Experience with the methods used to age organisms.
Experience in use and calibration of scientific equipment.
Experience in catching, moving, handling or taking care of living aquatic organisms in the field or laboratory.
Experience with aquaculture systems.
Experience in collecting, managing and validating data.
Experience in using scientific software, for example: statistical analyses, results graphing, GIS, basic programming (R, SAS), etc.
Experience in imaging, image analysis and processing.
