Duties

Providing technical and logistical support during systematic visual surveys carried out by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as part of scientific studies and research related to marine mammals. The appointees will be participating to field work activities aboard aircrafts or boats aiming to acquire scientific information pertaining to the distribution and abundance of marine mammals in Eastern Canada and Nunavik. Appointees may also have to assist scientific teams by carrying out technical tasks in laboratory or field or other tasks related to processing of scientific data within the framework of other priority research programs within DFO.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff positions with various tenures at the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute (Quebec) and in Moncton (New-Brunswick).

The selection committee will use specific draws in order to select applications, based on actual needs in both locations.

Successful completion of a recognized post-secondary program in a field relevant to the duties of the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience in providing technical support in one OR the other of the following fields:
a. Performing systematic surveys by transect for animal species;
b. Visual sampling and identification of marine mammals, birds, terrestrial vertebrates, or aquatic species to acquire information on the spatial and behavioural ecology of the target species;
c. Participating in fieldwork for projects on marine mammals, regardless of their nature.

Experience providing technical field support to projects on marine mammal science.

Experience providing technical field support to projects on sea birds science.

Experience providing technical field support to projects involving vertebrates or others marines species.

Experience in conducting systematic aerial line transect surveys.

Experience in conducting systematic nautical line transect surveys.

Experience in conducting technical scientific work in coastal waters aboard airplanes, helicopters, small vessels or ships.

Experience working in remote areas for extended periods of time.

Experience in database management.

Experience in the planning and logistics associated with scientific work in laboratory and/or in the field.

Experience in the use of software for the manipulation of geo-referenced data
such as ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.

Experience working in the field for periods of several weeks to several months with a small team.

For all positions :
• Willingness to adapt to variable and atypical work schedule and work overtime.
• Willingness to work aboard various platforms including helicopters, small planes,
and boats of various sizes as required, or in isolated environments.
• Willingness to travel in a repetitive manner, in blocs of up to six consecutives weeks at a time, for periods that may extend over several months.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - For all positions:
• Medical fitness in accordance with certification by Health Canada.
• Valid driving license.
• Willingness and ability to work at sea or in the field in remote or isolated environments and under primitive conditions (e.g. camping) for periods of up to 6 weeks consecutive weeks, and for periods that may extend over several months.
