Are you passionate about Canadian businesses and/or intellectual property (IP)? Do you have a strong desire to serve the public in a fast-paced, complex and interesting field where every file is different? IP Examiners at Trademarks and Industrial Designs Branch (TIDB) are responsible for assessing and processing applications by individuals and companies for registration of trademarks and industrial designs in Canada. This means that each application is examined for registrability in accordance with the applicable Act and Regulations, based on defined policy and practice. Examiners communicate with clients in writing and over the phone. The ideal Examiner is sharply detailoriented, client-focused, able to adapt to change, and can easily handle a large file-load.

CIPO is a special operating agency of ISED. We are located at promenade du Portage, Gatineau, Quebec (walking distance to downtown Ottawa). The building is located in downtown Gatineau, with restaurants and boutiques close by. There is also easy access to public transportation and various paid parking options available. Like to exercise? TIDB is a high-volume production environment, which means there are clear and specific expectations about the quality and quantity of daily work (quotas). Each year, we receive up to 70 000 trademark and industrial designs applications, and our mandate is to examine them as efficiently as possible. The Examiner role is very independent and self-sufficient in managing day-to-day tasks. After a period of training and peer-coaching (generally up to seven months from hire), IP Examiners may have opportunities to work on special projects that enhance the services delivered by the branch.

Due to COVID-19, employees of TIDB are currently teleworking where operational needs do not require physical presence in the office. Training and coaching is being offered virtually during COVID-19 restrictions. Examiners do have various tasks that must be done in the office, and generally, attend on a rotational basis once every 1-2 weeks following all applicable health and safety guidelines. Partial telework arrangements will continue to be available after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Intent of the process

The first appointments are expected to take place in early March as well as in early April 2021. For this reason, qualified candidates who will receive a job offer must be available
to begin intensive training on trademarks or industrial designs on one of these dates. In addition, a pool of qualified candidates will be established to meet the future needs of the organization.

EDUCATION:
- A degree(1) from a recognized post-secondary institution (already obtained or will be obtained by May 14, 2021) OR an acceptable combination of education and experience(2).

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

- How will you communicate with me ?
We will contact you by email or through your GC Jobs account.

- Why was my application automatically rejected when I submitted it ?
In order to be placed in the inventory, you must meet the essential education qualification at the time you submit your application. If you receive a message "Application rejected at screening" immediately after submitting your application, you probably answered "No" to the screening question assessing the essential qualification of education. If you have incorrectly indicated "No" for this qualification, simply retrieve your application and update your answer to the screening question.

- What does "Registered in the inventory" mean ?
Once your application has been successfully submitted to the inventory, your status may be: "Date of disclosure of results: Listed in the inventory". This automatically generated message by the system means that your application can be considered. You will be informed in the event that your application is considered as part of a process generated from this inventory.

- What happens if my application expires ?
Your application will be kept in the inventory for 60 days. A notice will be posted in the "My Job File" menu of your account 12 days before your application expires. If you do not take this into account, your application will be deactivated and it will no longer be considered for submissions from this inventory. In the event that your application expires during the effective period of this inventory, a notice will be posted in your account. If you wish to confirm your interest and reactivate your application, select the "Renewal of my application" link.

- My personal information has changed, what should I do ?
