The Geological Survey of Canada-Atlantic (GSCA) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) seeks to safely collect multibeam sonar data (bathymetry and backscatter strength) in Minas Basin, Nova Scotia in the survey (summer) seasons of 2021 and 2022. These multibeam data will augment terrestrial LiDAR collected around the margin of the basin at low tide during 2019. Multibeam data were previously collected throughout Minas Channel and Minas Passage. The successful candidate will prepare a feasibility report of conducting a multibeam sonar survey of the Minas Basin ensuring overlapping coverage of existing multibeam and LiDAR data. The feasibility report will include specifications regarding the appropriate vessel type, multibeam sonar, physical oceanographic properties (temperature and salinity), survey line design, port facilities, recommended survey dates and times based on the most appropriate tidal model, estimated survey costs based on an appropriate day rate and contingency costs, and any other survey engineering aspects deemed appropriate to the study.
The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a Doctor of Philosophy(Ph.D.) degree in geodesy and geomatics engineering with specialization in multibeam sonar survey design.
