Duties

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announces a call for applications for a physical scientist position in physical ocean modeling within the Ocean Sciences Division, Pacific Region. This position will be located at the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, BC.

The incumbent will be responsible to acquire and provide knowledge, concepts and methodologies in physical oceanography, on behalf of the DFO objectives for ensuring the conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources, as well as providing safe and secure waterways. The incumbent will also be responsible to provide scientific knowledge, data, information, analysis, advice and recommendations to scientists and managers within the Department and to other external organizations including the general public.

Specific aspects of the duties include:

• Contribute to research and development of regional ocean models at basin, coastal and nearshore scales based on a state-of-the-art community ocean modelling platform;
• Improve the performance of existing regional models within Fisheries and Oceans Canada;
• Evaluate model performance through joint analysis of model results and observational data;
• Contribute to technical development for running regional models in operational forecasting mode with a setting consistent with other ocean forecasting systems within Government of Canada;
• Provide external collaborators with technical support and advice; and
• Prepare scientific documents for publication in the form of in-house technical notes and presentations, and contribute to writing peer-reviewed scientific articles.

Intent of the process

The intention is to staff one PC-03 position on a temporary basis in Sidney, BC. A pool may be established and may be used to staff potential similar positions on a temporary or permanently basis with DFO, Pacific Region.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
• Graduation with an acceptable Master or Doctoral Degree from a recognized university with a specialization in physical oceanography or in a related discipline with pertinent experience in physical oceanography modelling.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
• Experience in setting up, testing and improving ocean circulation models such as, but not limited to, NEMO, ROMS, FVCOM.
• Experience in running ocean models on parallel processing computers using shared or distributed CPU and memory computers
• Experience in using observations for the purposes of model analysis or verification, using modern scientific software packages, such as, but not limited to MATLAB, Python, R
• Experience in providing technical advice, assistance and recommendations related to ocean modelling to team members and collaborators
• Experience in organizing and undertaking assigned scientific research projects
• Experience in preparing and presenting scientific findings at scientific or stakeholder meetings

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE
• Experience in developing ocean models for operational forecasting using an efficient and easily automated software package.
• Experience in time series and spectral analysis of oceanographic data.
• Experience in scientific data management, database design and query programming for the storage, analysis and access of scientific data types.
• Experience in setting up, testing and improving the simulations of the ocean circulation model NEMO.
• Experience in writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
