Education

Graduation from a recognized university with specialization in a biological science or graduation with a degree from a recognized university in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience

- Experience in coordinating, and directing biological programs.
- Experience in analysis or interpretation of biological data to provide assessment or management advice.
- Experience in maintaining working relationships between two or more of the following groups: First Nations, recreational, commercial harvesters, other stakeholders, Federal and Provincial Government agencies, International agencies, and/or other interest groups.
- Experience in resolving issues and conflicts by mediating or arbitrating disputes among competing commercial fishers, recreational fishers, aboriginal fishers or competing interests.

Information on language requirements

Knowledge

- Knowledge of the life history of Pacific marine species such as invertebrates, salmon, or pelagics .
- Knowledge of Pacific Region invertebrate, herring or salmon fisheries including management, gear types, stakeholders and First Nations interests.
- Knowledge of current advisory processes related to commercial, recreational and First Nation fisheries.

Ability

- Ability to resolve issues and conflicts by mediating and arbitrating disputes among competing interests groups.
- Ability to plan, co-ordinate, and direct programs to achieve stated objectives.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Education

Experience

- Experience in managing fisheries (such as First Nations, Recreational or Commercial)
- Experience in creating and delivering presentations to the public.
- Experience in managing human and financial resources.
- Experience in using GPS and GIS mapping software.
- Experience in participating in technical committees to provide technical advice to the department and clients groups.
- Experience in conducting resource stock assessments.
- Experience in designing, analyzing and reporting stock assessments.
- Experience in preparing technical or scientific reports.
- Experience in quantitative and statistical analysis.
- Experience preparing and publishing peer reviewed literature.
- Experience in modelling of biological populations.
- Experience in data management.
- Experience in database design.

Knowledge

- Knowledge of stock assessment techniques and survey designs for catch and effort estimation.

Ability

- Ability to provide oversight to staff and contractors.
- Ability to work effectively independently.

- Ability to prepare and publish reports.
- Ability to demonstrate thoroughness and accuracy.
- Ability to perform complex statistical analyses using Excel and/or other programs

- May be required to work in remote field camps and locations
- May be required to work in and around rivers and lakes.
- May be required to travel to the United States of America.
- May be required to fly in helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft.
- May be required to carry a firearm for protection from wildlife.

Conditions of Employment:

- Willingness to travel (including long distances)
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and variable hours as required by operational needs
- Willingness to perform work as required in helicopters, small planes, and boats.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 driver's license
