Duties

• Collection, logging, transport and processing of samples (digesta, urine, fecal material, compost).
• DNA amplification using polymerase chain reaction.
• Molecular and microbiology duties include, but are not limited to, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
• Calibration of laboratory equipment.
• Data entry and initial analysis; record maintenance.

Intent of the process

We are looking to hire a student currently enrolled or willing to enroll at the University of Lethbridge by January 2021 in a PhD program with specialization in molecular biology, as Dr. Tim McAllister is a CO-PI with Dr. Athanasios Zovoilis (University of Lethbridge) on a project entitled “Genomic ASSESTS (Antimicrobial Stewardship Systems from Evidence-based Treatment Strategies) for Livestock.”. This individual will work at the Agriculture and Agri Food Canada Lethbridge labs and Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of Lethbridge for his/her program and course work.

Currently enrolled or willing to enroll by January 2021 in a PhD program with specialization in molecular biology at the University of Lethbridge.

Degree equivalency

Experience preparing samples for analysis.
Experience using molecular biological tools such as isolation of nucleic acids from bacteria.
Experience with DNA extraction techniques, PCR and qPCR.

* In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Reliability Status security clearance - Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.

Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (cold, hot, dust, and noise) with exposure to animal manure and animal body fluids (blood, urine, mucus, infections, semen and vaginal fluids).
Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory with chemicals.
Ability and willingness to work with hazardous chemicals.
Ability and willingness to control known allergies through the use of dust masks and/or medication and not impinge on tasks to be performed.
