Duties

The student will conduct research on bacterial blight diseases in dry beans, focusing on exploring genetic resistance in large seeded dry beans.
Expected approaches are to:
1) complete bacterial blight screening of breeding populations in field and indoor settings,
2) use traditional, as well as, develop new molecular markers through genotype by sequencing approaches to examine breeding populations
3) analyse the results of the experiments using appropriate statistics, advanced bioinformatics and genetic mapping software packages to uncover genetic relationships for bacterial blight resistance in large seeded dry beans.

Work environment

The Harrow (Ontario) Research and Development Center is one of 20 Research Centres under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network. The facilities include a modern lab/office complex to house more than 100 full-time staff and two research farms for field studies. Harrow RDC is a lead contributor in research on dry beans in Eastern Canada. The breeding and pathology programs combine pure and applied science to bring forward high yielding, disease resistant cultivars to Ontario and Canadian producers.

EDUCATION
Currently enrolled/or willing to enroll in a Master’s program at the University of Guelph-Ridgetown Campus with specialization in Plant Agriculture.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
- Experience in Molecular Biology or Cytogenetics
- Experience in working with agriculturally important crops
- Experience in Bioinformatics
- Experience in conducting scientific research
