Intent of the process

This appointment process will initially be used to staff one, temporary, position in Dartmouth, NS. The assessment board may create a pool (i.e. list) of fully or partially qualified candidates which may be used to staff similar positions on an indeterminate or temporary basis within Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard.

**Important: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, most employees of Marine Engineering are currently working remotely. The department is actively working on a flexible, phased approach for the safe return of employees to their usual workspaces. Therefore, this opportunity will may initially be a remote working opportunity. When it is deemed safe for our branch to return to the workplace, the opportunity will be in Dartmouth, NS.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Naval Architecture, Marine Systems Design or equivalent.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Experience in writing technical documents, such as Statements of work, Technical Statements of requirement or technical reports.

Experience in analyzing issues, assessing impacts, and developing options or solutions in a *marine environment (i.e. an environment or industry directly involved with the maintenance, overhaul or repair of cargo, Navy or passenger vessels).

At least one year of experience in using AutoCAD 2010 or later to generate detailed Structural Mechanical or Electrical 2D drawings.

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of configuration management fundamentals and associated processes.

ABILITIES:

Ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written communication will be assessed).
Ability to use Microsoft Word and other programs to review and modify electronic documents, including drawings in formats such as TIFF, PDF or AutoCAD.
Ability to interpret and gather information from technical drawings commonly used in the marine industry.

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job)

EXPERIENCE:

Experience managing new vessel construction or vessel refits.

Experience in producing ship structural drawings.

Experience in analyzing ship stability, including the relative positions of CoB, CoG, Metacentre in various conditions.

Experience with GHS software or equivalent for intact and damage analysis stability analyses.

Experience with hand calculations for simple structural analyses (bending moments, UDL’s, point loads etc.) to analyze local stress and be able to calculate shear area of ship sections.

Experience in the preparation of weight estimates with a focus on ship stability.

Experience in using TC, SOLAS and Class regulations.

Experience working in a marine environment*.

*Marine Environment is defined as either shipboard operations or an industry directly involved with the maintenance, overhaul or repair of cargo, Navy or passenger vessels.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requirement to work occasional overtime, as needed.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Must wear and maintain CSA approved safety footwear and maintain job-related personal safety equipment.

Required to travel using various means of transportation such as ships, planes, and helicopters, sometimes on short notice.

Required to conduct site visits to vessels, shipyards, and other industrial sites, involving walking over rough terrain and/or climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolding, or other structures, maintaining balance on a moving vessel, and bending in awkward positions and working in confined spaces.
