The selected student will work directly with researchers from the University of Victoria, the Geological Survey of Canada, Pacific Division and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Sidney, British Columbia.
The Public Safety Geoscience Program within the Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada) carries our research work to keep Canadians safe from geohazard events such as earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis. The selected student will carry out the following duties:
• Analyze imagery of coastal subaerial and submarine failure scars and deposits in Georgia Strait, BC;
• Assess and quantify potential failure volumes and modes of failure;
• Complete tsunami modelling of selected tsunamigenic failures to assess run-up and inundation of surrounding coastal areas;
• Make presentations at scientific conferences, workshops, and meetings;
• Write scientific reports;
• Publish research results as papers in peer-reviewed professional journals.
The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Earth Sciences with specialization in tsunami modelling at the University of Victoria.

• Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Victoria in a Doctor of Philosophy program in Earth Sciences with specialization in tsunami modelling, or other specialization relevant to the duties of the position.
• Successful completion of thesis(es) in tsunami modelling and/or evidence of publication(s) in tsunami modelling (minimum submission of manuscript(s) to one or more peer reviewed journals).
In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
• Experience in modelling of tectonic and/or landslide-generated tsunamis.
• Experience in interpretation and analysis of case study events.
• Experience of writing MATLAB codes to generate figures, tables and animations.
• Experience in writing scientific reports and articles.

• Knowledge of software used in tsunami modelling (including FUNWAVE-TVD, NHWAVE).
