In keeping with public health guidance, the Department of Finance Canada has established a remote work stance that we will maintain until at least the end of the calendar year and possibly longer, depending upon how the public health situation evolves. While the department is working remotely, we are committed to supporting employees with the necessary tools to work effectively from home.

The Department of Finance Canada is open to considering telework arrangements requests for any new recruit who may wish to defer relocation to the National Capital Region while we continue our remote work stance.

Duties

Master’s graduates hired under the Economist and Policy Analyst stream are involved in all aspects of the Department's work. They conduct policy analysis and forecasts, perform research, and provide recommendations on a wide variety of public policy issues. Recruits can choose to specialize in a particular area of the Department of Finance, or can gain experience in a number of different areas of the Department.

Intent of the process

Only applicants meeting the essential qualifications will be included in a pool of qualified candidates, which hiring managers from the Department of Finance and other federal government organizations may draw on until December 2021.

As this is a collective staffing process, the qualifications required may differ from one position to another. Our staffing process allows hiring managers to identify their individual needs for the position they are looking to fill. One or more of the asset qualifications may be used to identify candidates who are a good potential fit for a particular position. Other criteria may also be used such as citizenship, official languages or organizational needs.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:

a) Degree
Candidates must have or be working on a Master's degree from a recognized university in one of the following fields:
- Economics
- Public policy/administration
- International relations/studies
- Business administration in finance

Candidates must be able and willing to successfully complete their Master's degree by December 31, 2021. Candidates hired will participate in the Economic and Social Sciences Services Developmental Program (ECDP).

b) Specialization in economics
University coursework must include the equivalent of at least three full-year undergraduate or graduate courses in economics (or six half-year courses) by the time of graduation. Candidates who have a concentration in finance at the Master's degree level and three or more half-year post-secondary courses in economics will be considered.

c) Academic excellence
Candidates must have obtained a grade point average (GPA) equivalent to 75 per cent or higher on their last completed Bachelor's degree.

Qualifications b) and c) will be validated. You will be asked to provide copies of your transcripts at a later step in the assessment process.

Academic scholarships, prizes, or awards.

Candidates having obtained high grades in undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the specialization relevant to the position being staffed.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience* in one or more of the following fields:
. Economics
. Public policy/administration

* The experience is to have been acquired within the last five years and can be demonstrated through a combination of volunteer work, student employment (e.g. Teacher's Assistant, Research Assistant) and/or work experience.

The Department of Finance Canada Economics and Social Science Services Development Program is a competency-based career development and progression program designed for the Economics and Social Science Services (EC) community in Department of Finance Canada's six policy branches. The program aims to develop high-calibre individuals to the target level of EC-06 Advisor/Economist (salary range: $98,641 to $114,400) within three to five years. Progression through successive EC levels up to the target level is based on a combination of performance evaluation and merit assessment established for the Economist and Policy Analyst program stream.
