Duties

Challenges:
The challenge of this position is the requirement of knowledge of both physics and biology to understand and evaluate the effect of radiation on biological material. The job will require programming skills, and additional tasks will require some laboratory work, including working safely with blood, acids and other chemicals.

Work environment

The Ionizing Radiation Health Sciences Division at Health Canada conducts research into novel methods for biological dosimetry. This position will involve the development and validation of new methods involving imaging flow cytometry, image analysis of biological markers of ionizing radiation and mathematical modeling of ionizing radiation effects in the space environment.

Education:

The student must be currently enrolled or willing to enroll in a Master's program at the Carleton University, with a specialization in Medical Physics

Areas of Study and Specializations:
Physics and Astronomy

Note: Applied research must be a requirement of graduation

Degree equivalency

Knowledge:
Knowledge of physical interactions of ionizing radiation

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

Abilities:
Ability to work independently in the lab including devising experiment procedures;
Ability to write technical reports of the experimental results and draft manuscripts based on research findings;
Ability to review literatures related to the research topic.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.*

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - NOTE: Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.

Student must be accepted in the masters program at Carleton University in the Department of Physics for the fall of 2020.
