Successful applicants will participate as part of a multi-year study focused on the
application of Earth Observation and remote sensing technologies and methodologies to support cumulative effects monitoring related to environmental impacts associated with responsible resource development and distribution. The research will primarily focus on the application of remote sensing to support the following areas:
1. Vegetation mapping algorithms – Develop, assess and document (via reports and publications) algorithms for mapping vegetation parameters using satellite imagery in support of cumulative effects monitoring.
2. Scaling forest ecosystem fluxes using earth observation data – Develop, assess and document (via reports and publications) approaches for using earth observation data to scale forest ecosystem fluxes in time and space.
The students should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals or conferences. Planning data acquisitions, pursuing field campaigns, and analysis of remote sensing imagery are all potential activities that can be included.
Experimental work will be performed in northern Alberta boreal forest regions. The analysis will largely be conducted at the candidate’s University. During fieldwork, the candidate may be exposed to inclement weather, insects, rough terrain and may need to wear protective gear.
Student will be hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) with the purpose to accomplish research and complete a thesis or dissertation. Duration of the RAP will be 1-2 years for Masters Students. Extensions may be possible.

• Have successfully completed a Bachelors Degree (for a Masters proposal) and have a strong background in geomatics, remote sensing or other related field, with an interest in environmental remote sensing.
• Must be registered in a graduate program at a Canadian University, or have a letter
of support from a prospective graduate supervisor.
Experience conducting field work with flux measurement in forest landscapes.
Prior research as documented with conference presentations or peer-reviewed publications.

-Ability to program computer codes to facilitate data analysis, and a familiarity with a
geomatics software package.
-Be able to demonstrate good writing and oral skills.
Ability to conduct field work in forest environments including required certification for first aid, vehicle driving, climbing and predator safety.
Confirmation of support from University supervisor to visit and acquire measurements at northern Alberta boreal forest regions.
